Paris 1981. La vague punk est passée et une nouvelle décennie s’ouvre. Les Stinky Toys ont splitté depuis deux ans et Hervé « le batteur du punk » Zénouda, dissident des influences 60’s du groupe d’Elli & Jacno, a des ambitions de songwriting et cherche des collaborateurs. Il est un observateur attentif de ce qui se passe de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique, à savoir les étranges lumières que Television et ses Jazzmaster tracent dans le Manhattan nocturne comme autant de guides, ou les murs du son à trois accords que percutent les drummings quasi-expérimentaux des Feelies. Il s’apprête d’ailleurs à aller vivre à New York pour deux années. Cet été-là, pourtant, c’est avec un transfuge de l’Est qu’il va former un duo : Gregory Davidow, performer, écrivain, musicien, frontman des Spions, « le premier groupe punk du pacte de Varsovie durant l’été de la haine 1977 », qui vient juste d’être expulsé de Budapest par les autorités communistes. Le binôme Est-Ouest s’aventure à une mission post punk —nom de code Mitzpah, « un mélange des mots hébreux mitzvah et chutzpah, où le premier décrit l’innocence mature du débutant dévoué et le second l’arrogance louche d’un étranger illégal » dira Davidow. À Paris, puis à New York, Davidow et Zénouda enregistrent des démos destinées à un label parisien avec l’aide des ex-Modern Guy, Yann Le Ker aux guitares et Jean-François Coen à la basse. Malheureusement le label, sous l’effet des vagues successives, sera très vite englouti dans les mers agitées du chobizeness et Mitzpah, bouteille à mer, dérivera pendant près de 40 ans, avant de resurgir aujourd’hui.
En 2020, grâce à une co-production avec le label toulousain Pop Supérette, Hervé Zénouda décide de reprendre ce projet et de ré-enregistrer l’ensemble des chansons avec la plupart des musiciens originaux. L’album intitulé Lonesome Harvest: Re-enactment N°1 (Paris 1981) sortira au printemps 2022. « Un document important dans l’histoire du rock français —fin de la première vague punk, début d’une nouvelle ère des années 1980. Où deux chemins vont s’ouvrir, celui du post punk d’un côté et celui des prémisses de la French Touch de l’autre.» dixit Zénouda.

Paris 1981. The punk wave had passed and a new decade was beginning. The Stinky Toys had split two years earlier and Hervé «the drummer of Paris punk» Zénouda, dissident from the 60’s influences of Elli & Jacno’s band, had songwriting ambitions and was looking for collaborators. He is a keen observer of what’s going on on the other side of the Atlantic, whether it’s the eerie lights that Television and its Jazzmaster trace in late-night Manhattan like guiding lights, or the three-chord walls of sound that the quasi-experimental drumming of the Feelies smashes into. He is preparing to move to New York for two years. That summer, however, he formed a duo with a defector from the East: Gregory Davidow, performer, writer, musician, frontman of the Spions, «the first punk band of the Warsaw Pact during the summer of hate in 1977», who had just been expelled from Budapest by the communist authorities. The East-West pair ventured on a post-punk mission - codenamed Mitzpah, «a mixture of the Hebrew words mitzvah and chutzpah, where the former describes the mature innocence of the devoted debutant and the latter the shady arrogance of an illegal alien», says Davidow. In Paris, then in New York, Davidow and Zénouda recorded demos for a Parisian label with the help of ex-Modern Guy, Yann Le Ker on guitars and Jean-François Coen on bass. Unfortunately the label, under the effect of successive waves, will be very quickly swallowed up in the agitated seas of show-business and Mitzpah, a bottle in the sea, will drift for nearly 40 years, before resurfacing today.
In 2020, thanks to a co-production with the French label Pop Supérette, Hervé Zénouda decided to take up this project and re-record all the songs with most of the original musicians. The album entitled Lonesome Harvest: Re-enactment N°1 (Paris 1981) will be released in spring 2022. «An important document in the history of French rock - the end of the first punk wave, the beginning of a new era in the 1980s. Where two paths will open up, that of post-punk on the one hand and that of the premises of the French Touch on the other,» says Zénouda.
